The Pret Way of Sandwich Making
Despite limited experience in the world of business, college friends Sinclair and Julian knew they wanted to sell proper sandwiches that they couldn’t buy anywhere else.
Opening Pret A Manger in London in 1986, the pair focused on using natural, preservative-free ingredients - transforming their fledgling business into an empire that today boasts over 150 shops and an annual turnover of nearly £200million.
In order to provide fast throughput at tills, the company prefered to use cash for customer transactions, using electronic card processing in only a small number of shops.
Ingenico was delighted to work with Pret A Manger to introduce the company to the benefits of electronic card processing on a larger scale, while developing a unique service that would significantly reduce customers’ transaction time and enhance buying experience.

Working with Pret A Manger’s bank, Ingenico developed a card payment service, which is being introduced throughout the company’s 150 stores.
The Chip based system caters to peak shopping times and high customer throughput, allowing customers to use their credit or debit card without entering a PIN or giving a signature when paying less than £15.
Ingenico’s i7780 portable tester and PIN pad and the Ingestore Solution payment system complement Pret A Manger’s existing service to provide a flexible and exceptionally fast card processing service as an alternative to cash payments.
Pret A Manger customers paying more than £15 further benefit from Chip and PIN services, providing increased protection against fraud for higher value transactions.
